Securing Wi-Fi

Access at Wi-Fi hotspots is protected with the iPassConnect™ client's conformance with industry security standards. Specifically, the Generic Interface Specification (GIS) and WPA2 support.

GIS is an industry standard originally developed by iPass for client-to-gateway wireless roaming security. It has since been adopted as part of the Wi-Fi Alliance WISPR standard. With the iPass service, GIS provides standardized, secure authentication between the iPassConnect client and wireless access gateway to protect against rogue access points, and provides SSL tunneling for user credentials over the wireless link.

Superceding the WEP and WPA security protocols, WPA2 is used with the iPass service to provide a high level of assurance that data is encrypted and secure across wireless networks. iPass supports WPA2, WPA and WEP security between iPassConnect and leading Wi-Fi routers in both home and enterprise environments.

iPass also provides broad support of 802.1x for campus environments and public networks such as the KT Wi-Fi Network in Korea. For campus environments, this support includes a high level of encryption between iPassConnect and the customer's 802.1x Wi-Fi campus environment. For home use, iPass allows a user to use WPA2 security between iPassConnect and their Wi-Fi router (eg Linksys, D-Link, etc). iPass supports many 802.1x authentication protocols such as LEAP, EAP-TLS and PEAP-TLS to ensure that only authorized users are able to access a wireless network.
